Another great performance by Italian Youth Speed squad in the second round of the European Youth Speed Cup. After winning five medals at Imst, Austria, last weekend, the tally rises to seven in France with two gold medals, three silver and two bronze. Thanks to these results three young Italian climbers, Alessandro Santoni, Paolo Martignene and Ludovico Fossali- have now won the overall European Youth Speed Cup based on their performances in Chamonix, Imst and the European Championships in Edinburgh.

The competition was anticipated by a day to avoid the forecast bad weather and yesterday the top podium places were taken by Alessandro Santoni (Juniors - Under 20), who therefore repeated last Saturday's success, and Paolo Martignene (Youth B - Under-16), bronze a week ago in Imst. In the finals both competed against teammates: Santoni got the better of talented Thomas Pasqua, while Martignene preceded Gianluca Zodda in the Youth B category that was literally dominated by Italy; Gabriele Randi won bronze while Giacomo Ingrami placed 4th. Silver was won by Ludovico Fossali who slipped in the final and was beaten by Russia's Shlyk. Alessio Voghera, competing in the same category, placed 4th and only just missed out on bronze. This time Giulia Fossali stood no chance against the Russians in the Youth B category, but she nevertheless won bronze after beating her teammate Silvia Porta.

No medal in the Youth A female, but Randi, Mattioli and Giorello once again improved significantly, setting new personal bests. Luca Camanni narrowly missed qualifying for the semi-finals. Teresa Gallucci confirmed her current form but, for now, the semi-final is still out of reach.

Italy therefore won three European Cups, just like Russia. A result which just a few years ago was completely unimaginable. It is worth noting that the victories of Santoni, Martignene and Ludovico Fossali are joined by the second places of Giulia Fossali and Gianluca Zodda.

The European Youth Speed World Cup ends in the best possible way for the Italian athletes who will now compete in the national Cup, while some will take part in the World Cup trials prior to the World Youth Championship, scheduled to take place in September in New Caledonia.
