With its 140m sheer drop, Helmcken Falls is the fourth highest waterfall in Canada. The main stream never freezes despite sub-zero temperatures, but the resulting spray freezes on the overhanging walls behind it, creating one of the most fascinating ice and mixed climbing areas in the world. Discovered in 2010 by Will Gadd and Tim Emmett, new routes have been established every season including February 2016 when Emmett and Klemen Premrl made the first ascent of Interstellar Spice. This 80m spray ice climb was ascended using a 200m rope and, graded WI 12, according to the duo "sets a new level of difficulty for any route of this style."
