'Karakorum 2000' forced to abandon North Face attempt
The Italian 'Karakorum 2000' expedition has abandoned its attempt of the unclimbed North Face of Gasherbrum II (8035m).

The mountaineers were able to establish Camp 1 at 5800m but were then severely obstructed by incessant bad weather. An attempt at fixing ropes on the rock wall ended in failure just short of the crest due to appalling conditions.

The team will now spend time climbing some surrounding peaks and attempting to reach Passo Sella, from where K2's Abruzzi Spur is clearly visible.
