| The Yorkshire Dales The gritstone crags of Yorkshire are very similar to those found in the Peak District, though generally less crowded. Of particular note are Almscliff and Caley, both situated just north of Leeds. At weekends and on sunny weekday evenings they are very popular with climbers from the nearby towns who will be happy to point out the classics. Caley The large boulders of Caley are divided into two areas, local folklore says that they are the result of an angry dispute between two giants who threw the rocks at each other. This has resulted in hundreds of fine boulder problems and micro-routes of all grades. In the words of the local guru Al Manson, "Do not forsake or scorn even the smallest". Almscliff Across the Wharf valley lies Almscliff. Although regarded by many bare-knuckle ice-climbing Yorkshiremen as a year-round venue, it should realistically be avoided on particularly cold or windy days. However, in reasonable conditions it is superb! There are top quality strenuous, well protected routes of all grades up to E5 and some of the best bouldering in the country. Friends and an ability to jam are of great help here; prepare to draw blood! Wall of Horrors (E3) and Great Western (HVS) are two of the more famous climbs. |
