Ski mountaineering in the Goldberggruppe.
The fantastic Goldberggruppe

The following itineraries climb three mountains in the Hoher Tauern and offer splendid descents on wide open glacier slopes. Conditions for ski mountaineering remain ideal until late June/early July.

With plenty of snow these slopes become avalanche prone and highly dangerous with avalanches reaching spectacular dimensions, so pay particular attention if ski mountaineering in these conditions.

From Kolm Saigurn 1598m follow the forest track that leads to the hotel, but immediately after the village cross the river on the left-hand side of the valley and, when close to the bus stop, head for the obvious Hocharn 3254m peak on the left. Ascend the obvious gully which cuts through the lower section of the Hoher Sonnblick's northern slopes. Next traverse left across the plateau and head slightly northwards, following the obvious line of ascent to the Hocharn summit, marked by a large wooden cross.

The ascent is always obvious and never dangerous, but look out for crevasses at the beginning and end of the season.
The descent follows the line of ascent and has no obvious difficulties. In case of fog pay particular attention to crevasses at the beginning and end of the season.

Time required: 6/7 hours
Height difference: 1650m

From the Naturfreundehaus at Kolm Saigurn 1598 m ascend south and, shortly after the first slope, turn right past some ruins to the Ochsenkarkees glacier which leads to the Hoher Sonnblick summit at 3106m.
The Zittel Haus is located on the summit and, if open, offers a welcome respite after the ascent. An important weather station has been constructed next to the Zittel Haus.

From Naturfreundehaus ascend to nearby Ammerhof 1628m by returning along the road from Kolm Saigurn 1598 m (10 min). Take the summer path n° 24/25 from here through the wood to the starting slopes of the Seekopf Kolmkar Spitze 2226 m. The path now divides into two: take the n°121 eastwards and climb up the Silberpfennig crest past two false summits to the Oberer Bockhartsee lake, which offers a magnificent view onto Schareck 3122m, another great ski mountaineering outing.

The ascent is obvious and never dangerous, but beware of unsettled snow on the Seekopf Kolmkar Spitze slopes.
The descent follows the line of ascent without any obvious difficulties.

Time required: 4 hours
Height difference: 1000m
