Rockmaster is synonymous with the biggest names in the competition circuit and this year, like the eleven before, only the best were invited. Much was expected of the Italian squad, in great form and climbing at home, but everyone knew that François Legrand would be a force to be reckoned with, especially since he'd spent a month acclimatising at Arco. Kate Brown and Chris Sharma were absent unfortunately, and so too was the good weather. Rain plagued Saturday's onsight which eventually had to be cancelled, but the spectacular speed climbing took place between the bouts of rain. Sunday lived up to its name, allowing first the women to compete on the workout route (checked out a few days beforehand). This pumpy sequence was feared by many, in particular by the 14 year old Italian prodigy Jenny Lavarda, who obviously felt under pressure at her first Rockmaster and fell low down. Both Muriel Sarkany and Liv Sansoz topped out, resulting in a superfinal which Sansoz claimed for herself. The men had to confront a move only ever seen before in boulder competitions: a sideways drop onto a big hold! This proved to be the crux, stopping eight of the competitors. Only Rakhmetov, Lombard, and Hirayama managed to hold the freefall. And Legrand, who came, saw and conquered. Once again. |
