    Christian Maurer wins Red Bull X-Alps 2017 for fifth consecutive victory

    At 10:53 am today the 34-year-old Swissman Christian Maurer won the Red Bull X-Alps 2017 for the fifth time running, while France’s Benoit Outters placed second. Maurer needed 11 days, 23 hours and 23 minutes to paraglide and walk across the Alps from Salzburg to Austria all the way to the Principality of Monaco

    At the start of the eighth day of the Red Bull X-Alps 2017, Switzerland’s Christian Maurer reached the last turnpoint at the Matterhorn and is now heading towards the finish line at Monaco. Yesterday his strongest rival, France’s Gaspard Petiot, was forced to abandon the competition.

Unfortunately this morning Italy’s Aaron Durogati was forced to pull out of the race due to his knee injury.

    American alpinist Jeff Lowe has been awarded the Piolets d'Or Lifetime Achievement Award. The prize will be assigned during the 25th edition of the mountaineering prize that will be celebrated in Grenoble, France, from 12 - 15 April. In the past the prize has been awarded to Walter Bonatti, Reinhold Messner, Doug Scott, Robert Paragot, Kurt Diemberger, John Roskelley, Chris Bonington and Wojciech Kurtyka.
