| Pietro Barigazzi was born in 1963 and became a Mountain Guide in 1992. He started work in a skiing resort. Although the experience itself wasn't that great, it enabled him to pass the severe French Ski Instructor's Exam. 1995 was an important year because he was awarded his Ensa Certificate in Chamonix, he became a member of the ski school "Alpine Experience", he climbed Mc Kinley with a 62 year old client and he met his wife! |

| Useful advice by Pietro Barigazzi, Mountain Guide and Val dIsère expert 1) Winter in Val dIsère is characterised by periodic storms, which bring large amounts of snow and are accompanied by high, north-westerly winds. Most accidents occur on the first sunny day after the snowfall. As a general rule, avoid leeward slopes steeper than 30 degrees. This will reduce the risk of getting caught in an avalanche, but remember that this risk can not be eliminated completely (except when you're safely in a bar afterwards)! 2) It can't do any harm repeating this: anyone who goes off-piste must have an avalanche tranceiver, a shovel and a probe. These devices are useless if you don't have all three. 3) Fresh powder snow is white gold; when making your tracks, try to ski as close as possible to existing ones and don't traverse or zig-zag unnecessarily In that way there's more space for everybody and, more importantly, you reduce the risk of an avalanche. 4) You may see groups of skiers, accompanied by a Mountain Guide, who ski down one at a time. This precaution is taken so as not to create an additional load and to not endanger the entire group. Do not "overtake" them, thus putting everyone's life in danger. 5) In Val dIsère there are more than 20 English Tour Operators, a cheaper alternative to traditional skiing accommodation. Their "chalet-hotels" offer a fixed menu and rooms with two or more beds. Social life tends to be great, but the only drawback is that by the time you get up in the morning, the best snow may already be carved up! More information at 0033(0)479419972. |
