The first stage of this years Ice Climbing World Cup finished on the 15th January in Pitztal, Tirol, Austria. Winner of the mens event was the only climber to reach the top of the final route, the 28 year-old François Lombard. His victory shows that specific training and competition experience can be of enormous advantage, for over the last couple of years the Frenchman has made more than a name for himself in the sports climbing World Cup circuit. Second to Lombard was the Canadian specialist Will Gadd, whos error in the final cost him dearly: he climbed out of the route boundary and was therefore stopped by the judges. Third place went to the Frenchman Stephane Husson, who was followed by Bruno Rüdisser, Anthony Lamiche, Tim Emmet, Dmitrii Bytchkov, Neil Gresham, and Alexei Tomilov. The womens event was won by the Russian Irina Ryzhenkova, followed by her team-mate Margarita Kolodkina. Third place went to the winner of the 1999 Cortina Ice boulder, the Hungarian Ildi Kiss. The next stage in the Ice Climbing World Cup is next weeks second competition in Courchevel, from the 23-25 January, followed by the Ice Boulder in Cortina d'Ampezzo on the 27-30 January.
